Jessica Alba, who played Sue Storm in the live Fox movie The Fantastic Four movies, opened up her thoughts on Marvel’s lack of diversity.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe recently introduced more diverse heroes in new projects such as Ms. marvelAnd the Shang Chi and the Ten RingsAnd the Black PantherAnd the The Hawk and the Winter Soldier. These projects brought different light and stories that had not been seen in the MCU before. Although Marvel Studios is making some changes with who chooses to portray their stories on screen, it doesn’t excuse the past and The Fantastic Four Actress Alba explains it perfectly.

In a recent interview with Glamor UK, Alba recalled her past with Marvel. In 2005 Alba starred in The Magnificent Four film, and described herself as “one of the (variety) few characters in the past”. She went on to tell Glamor UK that there have been some significant efforts made in the world of the film industry and within the MCU itself, however, noting the state of the entertainment business at the moment as “still quite Caucasian”. The The Fantastic Four The actress went on to express her opinion that it is necessary for people in the world to see that world actively and accurately represented on the screen. “I think more about the young people who are coming, who will be our future leaders, it is important for them to see the world on screen, or in stories, in the dreams that we make as actors; it reflects the world they are in.”

One of the most common issues that has appeared in the media over the past few decades is diversity on screen. Many people of color, size, and economic status found themselves unrepresented when they looked at their favorite characters on the big and small screen. Although many large production companies have been trying to bring more normality and variety into their projects, they still lack what viewers need to feel included. So, Alba’s comments about diversity in Hollywood add to a larger conversation that has continued to grow over the years. Although Marvel was making strides to offer more acting, many viewers criticized the studio for being a “fake wake-up” and for its performance as they chose to bring more racial characters to the big screen.

It’s hard to know if Marvel Studios’ changes in its variety between now and 2005 are for the right reasons, and that question may never be answered. However, with the release of blockbusters like Black Panther And the Shang Chi and the Ten Rings, younger people of color can finally see themselves as heroic characters on the big screen, which should definitely be commended. However, there is always room for more variety and representation, so now it’s in the hands of Marvel Studios and other major production companies to bring that to their audience.

The The Fantastic Four Movies are now available on Disney Plus.
