Sony PlayStation4 beats Xbox One sales, Microsoft admits

Microsoft has finally acknowledged that the Sony PlayStation4 has outdone its Xbox One game console in terms of ales and dock. Documents submitted to Brazil’s national competition regulator revealed these numbers, according to a report by The Verge.

“Sony has overtaken Microsoft in terms of console and game console sales, having sold more than twice as many Xbox consoles in the last generation,” Microsoft said in those documents.

Microsoft hasn’t released Xbox One sales numbers since 2016.

Sony is also no longer announcing PS4 shipments and its lifetime sales numbers remain at 117.2 million.

According to the documents, Microsoft may have sold less than 58.5 million Xbox One units.

Microsoft appears to be closing the gap with its Xbox Series S/X consoles.

According to Ampere analysis, “Sony ended 2021 with cumulative PS5 sales reaching 17 million units, about 1.6 times the Xbox Series sales performance.”

Late last month, Sony warned of poor future PlayStation (PS) game console sales, along with lowering its annual profit forecast, as it closed its $3.7 billion acquisition of Bungie, developer of Destiny and popular Halo franchise.

Sony revealed that it shipped 2.4 million PlayStation 5 consoles in the June quarter, up just 4 percent from the 2.3 million shipped during the same period last year.

Lifetime PS5 shipments have now reached 21.7 million.

Microsoft previously said it expects revenue to drop from low to medium single digits, driven by lower first-party game content on Xbox consoles.

In the June quarter, gaming revenue was down 7 percent and 5 percent in constant currency.
