Months after selling its Western studios, it appears Square Enix is creating a new one in the West.
According to a new comment Request (Opens in a new tab) Filed by Canadian Trademark Database (Thanks, VGC (Opens in a new tab)), Square Enix will open a new studio called Studio Onoma that will be involved in “publishing computer game software and video game software.” Square Enix Newco Limited, a newly established company based in London, is listed as the trademark applicant.
Apparently, the new studio could also produce things like strategy guides, stickers, flight sheets, outfits and apparel, action figures, and battery-powered games, although traditional video games will apparently be its primary focus.
It’s always seen as a major player opening a new studio, but there’s growing interest here in the wake of Square Enix’s massive deal with Embracer Group. This deal saw Square sell developers like Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montreal and Square Enix Montreal, as well as IPs including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, and Legacy of Kain to Embracer for $300 million.
At the time, Square Enix said the sale would “help the company adapt to ongoing changes in the global business environment by creating a more efficient allocation of resources.” She also said that she will be setting up new studios and reorganizing her business to focus on “[cultivating] Strong IP” as well as “new IP creation.” It appears we may be seeing the first fruits of these efforts with this pending implementation of a new studio in the West, although more details are not clear.
While we wait to hear more, here are some New games for 2022 Let’s look forward to it.
