Warhammer 40k: Darktide makes slaying dozens of enemies as an eight-foot giant super fun

Warhammer 40k: Darktide

Earlier this year, we learned that Warhammer 40k: Darktide introduces Left 4 Dead style of storytelling with over 75,000 lines of dialogue already written. Developed by Swedish outfit Fatshark – of War of the Roses, Warhammer: Vermintide fame – Darktide is a brilliant, gritty and often stressful action game for four players that investigates the suspected infiltration of Chaos on the planet Atoma Prime in the Hive City of tritium;

But this week at Gamescom, I didn’t really care about any of that. Not because it wasn’t interesting – far from it, Darktide seems more exciting than the neck-breaking, brutal bloodshed of Vermentide before that. But during my time with Darktide at Gamescom 2022, all I cared about was blowing the gruesome heads of dozens of AI-controlled enemies with a machine gun. Even writing that sentence alone made me smile.

I spent most of my 45 minutes or so with Darktide’s smile. Because even though I’m a fighter with magical inclinations, stealth, or a long-range warrior in games of this sort, I’ve filled the massive boots of Ogryn’s Yarp—a kind of bruised tank who might have spied on his fellow game-promoting stuff. As detailed in an interview with Edge Magazine (Opens in a new tab) In May, the Yarp’s eight-foot tire proved a pain in the neck for the Fatshark environmental design team, as they ended up doubling the size of narrow driveways and driveways in order to accommodate the big boy.
