If you’ve been scrolling through Netflix lately, you might have noticed a new entry that is topping movie charts. Running with the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee follows fugitive tech pioneer John McAfee in his later years on the run before dying in 2021. Through a combination of interviews and archival footage, a portrait has been drawn that makes Tiger King seem tame by comparison.
The man who once tweeted that he had “47 genetic children,” McAfee was a hugely controversial figure best known as the creator of McAfee antivirus software. He later finds himself embroiled in several major scandals, including tax evasion and his appointment as a VIP by Belize Police in a murder investigation.
It has proven a hit with viewers – but not everyone is convinced by Netflix’s latest success story. “If you haven’t watched Running with the Devil on Netflix, please go do it. What a wild documentary,” one on Twitter (Opens in a new tab). else added (Opens in a new tab), “What a ride.” single viewer Wrote (Opens in a new tab)“It’s weird, weird, and tragic at the same time” and another too describe it (Opens in a new tab) as “pure madness”.
On the other hand, many resented how the documentary was put together. “Nearly two hours of footage wasted by filmmakers who don’t check facts or know how to create suspense or plots. So many missed opportunities,” lament one (Opens in a new tab). another has called him (Opens in a new tab)“One of the most disjointed documents I have ever seen,” adding that it “looked like random camera shots with no substance.”
Another summed up the many frustrations, say (Opens in a new tab)“The most boring doc I’ve seen in a long time. It’s not very interesting…sorry Netflix, that’s not good.”
The jury, then, is still out on the documentary.
