Uncover the truth about the Hogwarts Legacy moral system

Hogwarts Legacy Dark

Hogwarts Legacy might not have the moral system players were expecting after all.

“Be careful where you choose to explore, as it may lead you down a darker path,” Hogwarts Legacy State of Play said, before showing your player character casting an unforgivable killing curse, Avada Kedavra.

Within 14 minutes of playing Harry Potter, we got our first hint on how to create a dark wizard. Depending on their choices in the game, players will be able to learn black magic and even use it against their opponents.

In addition, since there is a Thestral carrier available in the Hogwarts Legacy Dark Arts pack, it is clear that our player character has already undergone a death.

But how far does the Hogwarts Legacy alignment system extend to the game as a whole? Here’s what we know:

Does Hogwarts Legacy Have a Moral System?

According to the official Frequently asked questions about Hogwarts LegacyHarry Potter has no moral system, instead giving players options to determine their compatibility.

Portkey Games emphasizes that “players will encounter various quests and storylines that will influence the witch or wizard of their choice.”

And we recently got a new example of what exactly this could entail.

If they choose to befriend Sebastian Salou, a student of Slytherin, players will go on exclusive adventures with their new ally. As they explore his family’s secrets, players seem to have the choice of either learning or searching for the unforgivable curse, Crucio.

But to what extent this choice will affect your time at Hogwarts and your interactions with other students remains to be seen.

In addition, it appears that this entire task may be optional, depending on whether or not you choose compatibility with Sallow in the first place.

With only a few months left until the release date of Hogwarts Legacy, Portkey Games can still reveal more about player alignment. At the moment, the “morals” system appears to be more restrictive than fans initially thought.

Could you be a villain in the Hogwarts legacy?

Hogwarts Legacy lets players decide how they want to respond to the story as it unfolds but it’s unlikely that you’re a wizard or an evil wizard.

“You can define who you are and how you choose to respond and interact in many conversations,” says Community Manager Chandler Wood.

For Dark Arts, using forbidden spells is an option you’ll make in the game thanks to missions like the ones mentioned above. But players should not expect their decisions to permanently move the slider of strict morals.
