Video games have evolved quite a bit from the simplified times of the past when hands-on visuals and fun gameplay were all that was needed to make games fun. Now, expectations from the games have increased quite a bit, as players love the idea of everything from the realistic graphics to the interesting main characters and side characters in their titles.
As a result, some of the most iconic characters in pop culture history are those that appear in video games, especially when it comes to the series’ various villains. In fact, the character writing of some individuals in video games is so powerful that some villains are almost like heroes in some people’s eyes. Here are some great examples of video game villains who would have been heroes in other games if the circumstances were different.
8 Sephiroth (Final Fantasy 7)
One of the most notorious villains in video game history, Sephiroth has gone down a dark path after discovering the true nature of his existence. While he might seem like the most despicable being – especially because of the way he killed Erith – there’s no denying that it was the circumstances around Sephiroth that led him to become so evil in the first place.
Things would certainly be different if he was calmly explained how he was born from the beginning and did not grow up as an experience but as a proper human being. With just enough love and kindness, Sephiroth could definitely have walked the path of good rather than being surrounded by darkness that turned him into a villain.
7 GLaDOS (Gate)
GLaDOS is another famous villain from the video game world who can actually redeem himself somewhat in the second game after Wheatley goes berserk with his new power. People who discover GLaDOS’ back story soon realize that its origin is also mired in tragedy.
GLaDOS is actually the digital version of Cave Johnson’s secretary and her rumored partner who is forced to become an AI. The deleted audio clips seemingly referring to this change are really chilling and show that GLaDOS might not have been such a monstrosity had the circumstances of its digital birth been more fun.
6 The con man (mass effect)
The Illusive Man is one of the most amazing characters in mass effectAnd the fact that the legendary Martin Sheen has voiced it is a huge plus. This man believes in the superiority and survival of the human race at all costs, even if it means wiping out other species of the galaxy to extinction.
Given that this character could eventually change his attitude, it was clear that the con man definitely had a conscience of his own. Perhaps with enough speech, he could have fought the entire universe instead of just ensuring humanity’s survival and nothing else.
5 Diamond Sever (Final Fantasy 8)
Cypher is a Squall competitor all the time Final Fantasy 8, who inadvertently becomes a pawn in Ultimecia’s goal to send the entire world into ruin. A misplaced superiority complex and his need to prove himself to others over and over again lead to him becoming an antagonist in the series.
Fortunately, he regains his senses near the end and chooses to cherish his friends rather than fight his enemies hopelessly. He brings about a major personality change that shows how much Sever has grown since his time as a reckless and insecure warrior.
4 Dutchman Van der Linde (Red Dead Redemption)
In a different time and place, the Dutch could have been the protagonist Red Dead Redemption. He genuinely cared for his gang early on and tried to secure the best life for them. Unfortunately, his thirst for power and tendency to be influenced by questionable characters like Mika ended up setting the stage for his eventual downfall.
Perhaps by being a better judge of character and having more self-awareness, the Dutch character could have been more understanding. As things stand now, he is nothing more than a deluded leader who must be subdued in the first match for the sake of others as he himself.
3 Goro Akechi (Persona 5)
Akechi is a tragic figure in a world Persona 5. While he had amazing abilities, he was always treated as a burden and ended up harboring feelings of hatred towards people who value friendship and the like.
It’s a shame because Akechi would have been a completely different person had he grown up with friends and family who really loved and nurtured him. If that was the case, he wouldn’t have served a despicable person like Shido just to get his gruesome father’s approval.
2 Akira Nishikiyama (Yakuza)
Nishiki is one of the most complex and adorable characters in yakuza series. Yakuza 0 He did a great job expanding on this character, and his friendship with Kiryu before it all fell apart during the events of the first. yakuza nickname.
Props must be given to Kiwami to show the chain of events that ultimately lead to Nishiki’s descent into madness and chaos. It’s an outright shame, and things could have gone differently for him had the incident related to Sohei Dojima’s death been avoided.
1 Letho Of Gulet (The Witcher)
Players who started playing The Witcher 2: King Killers At first he saw Letho as nothing more than a gruesome villain out to destabilize the hierarchy that exists in the world of the magician. However, later, it is revealed that Letho performed all these actions in an effort to restore the Snake School.
While it’s misleading, players can still understand why Letho continues this course of action. If the roles were reversed, there’s no reason to know why Geralt wouldn’t jump at the chance to get his school back, too!
